Abstract There is major fire safety concern about failure propagation of thermal runaway in multicell lithium-ion batteries. This article overviews the passive fire-protection approach based on insulation by intumescent coating materials and blankets for viable resistance. The will expand (up to 100× heating) form a thick, porous char layer act as barrier insulate substrate. It also used seal around openings wall or floor impede spread smoke. High-temperature are made noncombustible flame-resistant fabric (e.g., aramids, fiberglass, amorphous silica, preoxidized carbon, mineral fibers). Both working can block significant portion (typically 60 90%) incident heat. Impact-resistant high-strength fabrics, either soft rigid forms, be parts multilayer protection assembly. Thus, assemblies various commercial products, including active blankets, battery-cell partitions, confinement bags containers, packaging materials, personal protective equipment.
